The Pope apologizes ...

But .... he takes no action.

The Pope installed a bishop in Chile, Juan Barros, who had been credibly accused by a number of people, of having covered up sexual abuse committed by his mentor, Fernando Karadima, over huge protests. The Pope insulted the victims. Then he finally agreed to have someone go to Chile to interview the victims. Now he's sorry he insulted them. But he's not removing the bishop. And he's not doing anything to stop sex abuse by clergy. If this was happening in a secular corporation, people would be going to prison.

I'm not sure what Barros did, other than he was a friend of the other priest that was found to be an abuser. He was accused of knowing his friend was an abuser, but the Court refused to accept that claim.

The allegations are that Barros was actually in the room when some of these abuses took place, and he didn't stop them but instead covered them up. Article from the LA Times ... http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-clergy-abuse-20180217-story.html ...

"[W]e were in Karadima's room and Juan Barros — if he wasn't kissing Karadima — would watch when Karadima would touch us — the minors — and make us kiss him, saying: 'Put your mouth near mine and stick out your tongue.' He would stick his out and kiss us with his tongue," Cruz told the pope. "Juan Barros was a witness to all this innumerable times, not just with me but with others as well."
